Apple Crisp

Apple Crisp

Pumpkin coffee, pumpkin muffins, and soon time for pumpkin pie. I am not sick of pumpkin yet, are you? Grace’s macarons have left me with the best taste memory and I’m about to try her recipe next. The perfect light bite of sweet and pumpkin-y spice. Okay. Anyway. That’s not what I’m telling you about today.

Before we get to the pumpkin pies and all of that Thanksgiving goodness, we need to tackle another fall staple. Apple crisp. Every year, I need to go apple picking at the orchard. I swear the apples taste different. Better. So much better. It’s hard to explain exactly why, but you agree, right?

Every time I pick any fruit myself, I feel the need to bake something. Maybe it’s because I pick more than I would buy in the grocery store. Who knows. It just feels right to bake after doing the work of picking the fruit. Reward for labor, always. So, when it comes to apples, my go-to is apple crisp. Some choose apple pie or maybe applesauce, but I have a hard time straying from the crisp. It just has all of the right components: soft, cinnamon apples with the perfect buttery crumb crisped on top.

This apple crisp does a lot of good things. One, your house will smell divine. Two, everyone living under your roof with praise and adore you. Three, you will be so utterly satisfied after a bowl of this that you won’t need anything else in the world ever again.

For the most part, this is really an easy recipe. The only part that takes extended time is the apple peeling and slicing. Aside from that, this can be popped into the oven while you’re eating dinner or right after your meal and be ready for a nice snuggle on the couch dessert.

A few tips to make this the best apple crisp- slice your apples and slice them as evenly as you can. If you prefer cubing them, go for it. I think the apples bake nicely when sliced, they don’t get super mushy as easily in my opinion. Secondly, use a pretty large glass pan if you can. The wider the pan, the more even your crumb will be, which helps the butter to melt and hold the crumb together. Lastly, don’t skip the zest! This makes the flavor really pop. I prefer orange when I have it, but lemon works well too. Follow the recipe below and definitely add your favorite vanilla ice cream when this crisp is nice and warm! Move over, pumpkin, apple is here to compete.

Instructions

  • Slice 5-6 (2 lbs) apples as evenly as possible
