Irish Soda Bread

Fun Fact: Irish Soda Bread is named as such because the only rising agent involved is the baking soda. Typically, when you think bread you think yeast – but not for this one. Irish Soda Bread falls into the “quick breads” category because it requires no rising time and isn’t the usual time commitment that yeasted bread is. You can whip this up in about an hour and have tasty buttered Soda Bread.

Gather Your Ingredients

You’ll need:

  • 2 cups (or 240g) of all purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 cup of buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup raisins

Don’t have buttermilk? Make your own with 1 cup of milk and 2 tbsp of white vinegar. Let sit for 10 minutes to curdle.

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F.

Mix your dry ingredients together: flour, baking soda, salt and sugar

Pour the buttermilk in and gently mix until just coming together. You want to be very gentle and careful to avoid over-mixing. You can use a spoon or your hands.

Add the raisins and mix until evenly distributed. Not of fan of raisins? You can use any other dried fruit or omit them entirely, Love raisins? Make it a 1/2 cup of raisins and live your best life.

Turn out onto a floured surface and flour your hands. Gently work it into a ball adding flour as needed so it comes together.

Place on a parchment lined baking sheet and cut a deep X into the top.

Bake at 400 for 27-30 minutes on the middle rack. You want it to be nice and golden on top and feel firm when you tap on it.

Let cool on the pan as long as you can resist eating in and then enjoy with butter, apple butter or your favorite topping. Best eaten the day of but will toast up just fine the next day.

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Combine dry ingredients in a medium bowl.
  • Pour buttermilk in and mix with a spoon or your hands very gently until just combined.
  • Add in raisins and stir gently to evenly distribute.
  • Turn out onto a floured surface and shape into a ball.
  • Place on parchment lined sheet and use a knife to cut a deep X on top. Bake on the middle rack for 27-30 minutes until golden brown.
  • Let cool and eat the same day.
